Winter Sports Review

Updated: May 3, 2022

by Mia Ferreira

Winter sports have been fun, but the official winter season is coming to a close. Many of our sports teams will be competing in CIF’s though, so there’s still a chance to watch them play. The sports that competed in the winter season are girls and boys soccer, girls and boys basketball, girls water polo, and co-ed wrestling.

Girls Soccer

The girls’ JV and varsity soccer teams had successful seasons, with significant wins over several rival teams after league started on January 13th. The girls’ JV wrapped up their season on Thursday, February 10th, with a tie against Mission Bay, and the girls’ varsity team will be competing in the CIF Open Division playoffs starting this week.

Boys Soccer

Both the boys’ JV and varsity teams have played amazingly, and continued to crush it during league. The JV boys just finished an incredible undefeated season under Coach Hector. Varsity also has had multiple impressive wins, including their recent victory against Cathedral Catholic High School, where they dominated on their senior night.

Girls Basketball

With six wins starting off league, the varsity girls’ basketball team began the season strong, and the JV team also showed promise. You can stay updated on Pointers’ basketball news through the Point Loma High School Athletics site.

Boys Basketball

Both the JV and varsity boys basketball teams had great seasons, with multiple impressive wins, and highlights available on the PLHS basketball Instagram feed.

Girls Water Polo

The girls’ water polo team had a dominant season, winning their league. They are currently in the CIF playoffs, including a first round victory against San Pasqual. Make sure to come out and support our Pointers!

Co-ed Wrestling

After a Covid outbreak, the wrestling team is back on their feet and competing out on the floor. 12th grade wrestler Katie Wright commented, “Great works are not performed by strength, but perseverance.” The team is currently training so that wrestlers that have qualified for CIF are in their peak form.
