Women’s Water Polo Preview

Updated: Feb 13, 2022

by Reese Sieger

The fall sport season has ended, which means it is time for our Point Loma High School winter sports! One of these winter sports is women's water polo, and consists of both a JV and varsity team. Water Polo is a unique sport because instead of having men and women competing within the same season, they compete in different seasons. Men’s water polo is a fall sport and they completed their season on October 28th. Women’s water polo is just starting up. Varsity’s first non-league game was on November 20th at Coggan Aquatic Center, where they won. JV also won their first non-league game that same weekend during the Draz Classic tournament.

The women’s water polo coach is Brandon Huff, and he also coaches the men's team. Huff and other staff held water polo tryouts in early November, and began their daily practices at Memorial Park shortly after.

“I’m looking forward to many things this Water Polo season. Firstly, I can’t wait for the opportunity to play tournaments this year since we were unable to do that during the pandemic. Also, we have a very strong group of seniors that I am very excited to spend my last year with. Plus, we have a bunch of newcomers who are very strong and I can’t wait to see what they can do. Overall, I’m super excited for this season!” said four-year varsity player CJ Hochbrueckner.

This year’s Varsity captains are seniors CJ Hochbrueckner, Summer Nelson, Rebecca Sadler, and Olivia Martin. This team has a lot of potential this year. After being demoted to Division III last year, our Pointers are looking to dominate the league and hopefully end back up in Division II next year. The team’s first official league game will be January 1st versus Francis Parker, however, there will be many friendly games before then. Their full schedule can be found on the Fighting Pointers website ( https://plhsfightingpointers.com ). Make sure to try to catch a game this season and support our women’s water polo team if you can, they are a joy to watch!
