Boys’ Water Polo
The water polo boys have been making great progress in every game. While their overall record doesn’t reflect how competitive and close their matches have been, the JV and varsity are both exciting teams to watch. If you'd like to catch them, the final varsity game is Thursday, October 28th against Patrick Henry HS (away).
Cross Country
From meet to meet, the cross country boys and girls have had amazing times and just keep getting better. Recently, at their out-of-town meet in Fresno, their fastest runner on the girls varsity team for the 5k came in 4th place with a speedy time of 18:38! The top boys’ varsity team member had a 9th place finish, with a whopping time of 15:57! Senior Sophie Compton has been a standout, including crushing the competition at the Ian Cumming/Tim Latham Invitational in September, while junior Manny Correia has led the boys’ team. With upcoming league meets on Wednesdays and invitationals throughout, check-in with the Point Loma website for more scheduling information.
Football
After dropping a couple of early non-league games, the Point Loma High School football team has recently won three out of their past five games, showing great improvement and putting them at 3rd place in the Eastern League. With the Homecoming game being an exciting sight to see and an amazing win, 42-8 over Canyon Hills High School, be sure to not miss out on the final game of the season, at home on Friday, October 29th at 7:00 P.M. against Christian High School. I can't wait to see how they finish off the season!
Field Hockey
Going great so far in the season, the girls’ varsity and JV field hockey teams have had amazing progress adjusting to the sport and sticking it strong against each team, including a thrilling 2-1 overtime shootout win over Santana High School, where junior Claire Thurmond buried the game winner. New head coach (and new PLHS P.E. teacher!) Ms. Morgan Jackson has the team ready to play each and every game. Even some of the newer players have earned a spot on varsity, so congrats to everyone who made either team and has committed to each game and practice! The final two games of the season will be during the first week of November, at Clairemont High School and at University City High School.
Girls’ Tennis
Despite a couple of tough losses for JV girls’ tennis, they still managed to fight well during the season to earn some wins. The varsity team has also played well, keeping the fans excited, and had a number of players, including seniors Nicole Pennell, Natalie Atkinson and Taylor Kunin-Ur, continue on to league tournament play this past week.
Girls’ Volleyball
The girls’ varsity volleyball team has had a solid season, led by captains Mia Pennell, Nora Wade, and Nikki Anderson. The team has pulled off some big wins so far, including defeating both OLP and Patrick Henry on the two schools’ respective senior nights. Representing their Pointer Pride with each game, the team has a loud and enthusiastic fan base of fellow students, families and fans.
Girls’ Golf
The girl’s golf team was paced this season by senior Taylor Riley, who recently won the 2021 San Diego City Tournament. Taylor plans to continue her athletic career next fall at LSU. Geaux Pointers!
