On Thursday, January 9th, the Pointer girl’s varsity soccer team took on one of their fiercest competitors: Scripps Ranch High School, which is in Division 1. As a member of the team myself, I can confirm there was a lot of build up to this game, as we wanted to prove to ourselves as one of the best teams in San Diego and that we could compete with a team in a higher division than us. The warm-ups were a little chilly as the rain poured down onto the field, and we knew we had to judge more for the soccer ball skipping and sliding further than normal. However, we were ready to compete and we did.
After regrouping at half, we came out even stronger, dominating possession. We played quick and sharp passes, moving around Scripps and tiring them out. About 8 minutes into the second half, the ball was played up-field to Adelka Hancova. She zipped past Scripps’ outside back with her amazing speed and quickly crossed into the box, where I volleyed it past the goalie, 1-0. Now we were on a roll. A couple minutes after that, Alani, one of our forwards made an incredible strike about 30 yards out and placed it right out of the reach of the keeper’s hand, making it 2-0. Finally, with about 15 minutes left in the half, the ball came to my feet in the box. I faked out their center back and ripped it over the goalie, creating the final score 3-0 Point Loma. As time wound down, our team felt proud of our accomplishment and our play. It was a team win.
