A new CIF sport is now here at Point Loma High School. Coached by Michelle Mannisto, the girls' flag football team has enjoyed some big wins this season against Clairemont High School, Hoover High School, and Canyon Crest Academy. The team has squared off against Clairemont twice now, winning 24-6 at home and 27-17 away.
Having both a JV and varsity squad, Coach Mannisto has a lot on her plate trying to maximize the first-ever season. The expansion of many sports at Point Loma High School expands the school community, but it also means additional usage of the fields and athletic facilities. Flag football shares its field with various other sports, including men's football and field hockey. Fortunately, it was successful bringing flag football onto campus and making it work with the surrounding sports. With the playoffs creeping around the corner, the team has a lot of work to be done on and off the field.
Sloan Theios, who plays receiver, said, “This is all new for us but we work well together as a team.”
On October 30th, the team will be taking on Kearny High School at home for their final regular season game, which will also be the team’s senior night, where they will honor many seniors. Senior Tani Gutierrez states, “I’m very excited for senior night and making history here at PL.”
