When I was first asked to write for the opinion column, I expected an unfiltered, unbiased writing platform to cover the latest school-wide issues. While we have the support of our school administration, student body, and Point Loma community, it is worth stating that there has been pressure not to discuss more controversially deemed content. Maintaining face is surely important for both the high school and community, but is it fair to turn the other cheek to events that are of a more contentious nature? In a perfect world, yes. But unfortunately, Point Loma High is guilty of the same behaviors as any other high school in the United States. So yes; this includes the good, the bad, and sometimes, the ugly. As such, this column will try its best to cover all of the above… Without further ado, let’s spill some tea!
First off, we should talk about the @plhsseniors Instagram account. I know, it’s geriatric drama, but it needs definitive closure... For about a month (don’t quote me I’m pretty sure they blocked me so I can’t check the exact dates) they took on the role of the ASB in putting out senior announcements. This worked well for about a week, until people started asking who ran the account and wanted a face reveal. At this point, the *official* official senior account, @plhs2019, had taken charge; but instead of stepping down, @plhsseniors pulled a Taylor Swift and posted pictures of snakes featuring angst-y captions and ending with equally edgy comments from followers. I tried to interview the account manager in hopes of revealing their identity myself, but they declined and asked for a DM based interview. Unfortunately without a provocative lead, I declined and scrapped any plans of investigative journalism. Since then, I have been blocked and now have no contact with @plhsseniors, but I still think they should make a face reveal and end the spectacle they started.
A more recent issue is the now-absence of music in our quad at lunch. Since a student began “dancing” in the quad a few weeks ago, the already limited entertainment shifted to complete nonexistence. Many rumors stem, including the notion that administration did not appreciating the donations said dancer received while “performing”(?) in the quad. Admittedly, it is against district policy to allow any behavior to continue with fiscal encouragement. However, the issue could easily be resolved by not allowing anyone to donate in the first place. Another idea that went around was that if more students were clustered it would make us an easier target for an attack on the school. While this is unlikely, especially in this context, safety is, of course, taken extremely seriously. Even a mention of such situations should be briskly offset. Regardless of the cause, it is fair to say that we miss our music in the quad. Hopefully, the ASB will at least review the situation. It would be greatly appreciated by the entirety of the student body.
