The 2022 - 2023 winter season has arrived, and along with it comes PLHS teams ready to win. Both the men’s and women's soccer teams are more ready than ever to start the important season ahead. The men’s varsity soccer team is made almost entirely of new players, 17 to be exact, all from the undefeated JV team last year. Men’s coach Elliott Savitz says that with such a new team, it’ll take a while for the boys to adjust to the challenging season they’ll be playing.
With that being said, the players performed extremely well last year and are sure to be just as competitive on their exciting, new stage. It’s their hope that by the time playoffs roll around, the team as a whole will have built a strong identity and will be capable of taking on any school that comes their way.
Also sure to have an exciting season is the women's soccer team. Their team standard has been set very high before the season has even started, following their run to the CIF Open Division state semi-finals last year. The team has been working hard to prepare for their ultimate goal: to win the CIF Championship. “It’s because of our recent success, the team and I feel we can also win the league this year,” says Ze’ Garcia, Point Loma’s head coach. With a goal as lofty as this, it doesn’t come without some obstacles. One comes with the team facing Cathedral Catholic High School, their most anticipated and difficult game this winter season. Nonetheless, the Point Loma High School women’s soccer team have not lost to Cathedral over the last two seasons and are looking to build on that success to propel them towards a Western League Championship.
This year, the team is led by beloved and formidable captains in Kylie Fehrenbacher, Gwen Rauvola, and Charlie Faucett. The captains set high standards for themselves and also for their teammates both at practice and during games, but make sure to always be encouraging and supporting of their fellow teammates. The captains trust that through the team’s hard work and dedication, they can improve on their success last year to reach their ultimate goal of winning the CIF Championship.
