Pointers’ Football entered the Division 2 CIF tournament seeded as 4th. This saved them a seat at semi-finals because of a first round bye. Point Loma faced Lincoln, seeded 5th, after the Hornets defeated Westview with a score of 54-14. On November 12th, the Pointers had defeated Lincoln, 33-20, at their Homecoming game under the rain. The probability of winning during the semi-finals was pretty balanced. Point Loma and Lincoln are both home to great talent, including several players with athletic scholarships.
It all came down to November 9th, when the Pointers and Hornets both took to the turf under the Friday night lights. In the first seconds of the first quarter, a 90 yard opening kickoff return became a touchdown and caused an early 0-7 deficit for PL. Eventually, Seniors J.L. Skinner and Wes Windmiller made a completed pass, adding seven points to the new scoreboard. Following two more touchdowns from Lincoln, the first quarter closed with a score of 21-7. After many interceptions, time-outs, and thrown flags, the last touchdown was made by Lincoln with 2 minutes and 51 seconds remaining on the clock. This touchdown solidified the Hornets’ victory, with a score 35-21.
And when the clock hit zero, it officially concluded Point Loma’s 2018 football season. All the players started to hug and show great sportsmanship and love for each other and the game. Several Pointers dropped down to the floor in tears after realizing that their determination fell short. This was the last high school football game for 15 seniors, making it even more memorable for everyone. Overall, it was an awesome season and all the football seniors will be missed. Once a Pointer, always a Pointer. EMAP!
